Safe Unlocking and Repair

Locked out of your safe? We can help.

Armstrong provides professional safe opening and repair services for most household safes. Whether you’ve forgotten the code, lost the key, or are dealing with a jammed lock, our trained locksmiths can assist.

What you can expect:

  • Most safes can be unlocked without major damage
  • Some safes require drilling to gain access and may need to be replaced
  • If a safe is highly specialised or extremely secure, we can refer you to one of our dedicated subcontractor partners who specialise in advanced safe works

Our goal is always to help you regain access quickly and discreetly while preserving the safe where possible.

Types of Safes We Provide

We supply and install a range of home safes with varying features based on what you need to protect.

1. Security Safes

General-use safes that offer theft protection and controlled access.

  • Perfect for jewellery, cash, and everyday valuables
  • Available with key, digital keypad, or biometric access
  • Some models meet insurance-grade EN1143:1 standards

2. Fire Safes

Designed to protect contents from high temperatures during a fire.

  • Tested for heat resistance (30–120 minutes depending on model)
  • Ideal for storing paper documents or irreplaceable items
  • Supplied in a variety of sizes and styles

Note: Data Protection Safes are no longer available for residential customers. These were designed to protect electronic media from heat but are now more commonly used in specialist or commercial environments.

Fire Ratings and Insurance Requirements

Understanding fire safety ratings:

All fire safes come with a time-based fire resistance rating. This is measured in minutes and indicates how long the contents are protected during a house fire. For example:

  • 30 minutes = basic protection for documents
  • 60–120 minutes = higher protection for sensitive or irreplaceable items

Insurance compliance:

More insurance providers now require that homeowners use a safe that meets a certified standard like EN1143:1. This is especially important for:

  • High-value jewellery
  • Large cash holdings
  • Collectables and heirlooms

We can help you choose a safe that meets your insurer’s requirements.

Why Safe Quality Matters

There are many low-cost safes available online or at hardware stores, but not all provide real protection. In fact, many budget models can be forced open in seconds with simple tools.

At Armstrong, we only work with safe brands that are trusted by security professionals and tested to international standards.

Safe Brands We Trust

We only work with reputable brands that have proven performance, local support, and consistent manufacturing standards.

Yale
A global leader in security hardware. Yale’s fire safes are known for:

  • Fire testing and compliance
  • Digital keypad access
  • Wide range of residential models

Dominator
A specialist brand focused on high-security and commercial-grade safes. Dominator offers:

  • Solid construction and bolt-down options
  • Multiple lock types
  • Insurance-approved models

We choose brands that are tested and supported in New Zealand, so we can assist with spare parts, servicing, or upgrades if needed.

Which Safe Is Right for My Home?

Choosing the right safe depends on:
  • What you’re storing (cash, documents, valuables, etc.)
  • The level of protection you need (fire, theft, or both)
  • Where the safe will be located in your home
  • Any insurance conditions you need to meet
We encourage homeowners to browse the catalogues at:

If you're unsure, give your local Armstrong branch a call. We’ll ask a few simple questions and recommend safe models that suit your home, budget, and needs.

Every Armstrong safe comes with the option of professional installation. Our team ensures that your safe is:

  • Delivered discreetly
  • Properly placed and secured (including bolt-down options)
  • Explained so you understand how to use and maintain it

We can also assist with future upgrades, servicing, or safe removals if your needs change over time.

Ready to Protect What Matters?

A quality safe provides reassurance that your important items are protected from both theft and fire. Whether you’re buying a safe for the first time or upgrading an old model, Armstrong offers the right advice, the right brands, and reliable support.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are locked out of your safe, do not try to force it open, as this can permanently damage the locking mechanism. Call Armstrong immediately.

Our trained locksmiths can open most household safes using non-destructive methods. However, in some cases where a safe is high-security, or the lock has failed, we may need to drill it to gain access, and we can often repair or replace the lock afterwards.

Yes, we highly recommend bolting your safe to the floor or a solid wall, especially if it weighs less than 1,000kg.

Even a heavy safe can be tipped onto a trolley and stolen by thieves if it isn't secured. Our professional installation service includes bolting the safe down to concrete or timber floors to ensure maximum theft protection.

A fire safe is specifically insulated to protect paper documents and valuables from high heat for a set period (usually 30 to 60 minutes), but may have thinner metal walls.

A security safe is built with thick steel and heavy-duty bolts to resist physical attacks and drilling. For the best of both worlds, we can recommend models that offer both a certified fire rating and a high cash rating for theft protection.

Insurance companies often require safes to meet specific standards, such as the EN1143:1 rating, particularly for storing high-value jewellery or large amounts of cash.

If your policy specifies a "cash rating" or specific grade, let us know. We stock trusted brands like Dominator and Yale that meet these strict compliance standards.

Generally, no. Standard residential fire safes are designed to protect paper, which burns at a higher temperature than digital media melts.

Data tapes, USBs, and hard drives require a specialised "Data Media Safe" to survive a fire. However, for most modern homes, we recommend cloud backups for data, while using your fire safe for physical documents, passports, and heirlooms.
