If it is a standard key stamped with "Do Not Duplicate," many hardware stores may still copy it because that stamp has no legal weight.
However, if you use an Armstrong Restricted Key System, the answer is no. These keys are legally protected designs that can only be duplicated with written authorisation from a nominated signatory. This prevents staff from making unauthorised copies without your knowledge.
A master key system is designed to give you tiered levels of access control.
It allows a manager to hold a single "Grand Master Key" that opens every door in the building, while staff members are issued keys that only open specific doors relevant to their job (e.g., the front door and their office). This eliminates huge keyrings and improves internal security.
If the employee does not return their key, or if they held a standard unrestricted key that could have been copied, we strongly recommend rekeying the locks to prevent future access.
If you use a restricted key system and the employee returns their specific key, you generally do not need to rekey the locks because you know for certain that no copies exist.
For businesses with many keys and staff, relying on a spreadsheet is risky. We recommend using Key Management Software.
Armstrong offers a cloud-based solution that creates a full digital audit trail. It tracks exactly when a key was issued, who signed for it, and when it was returned, ensuring you always have a real-time view of your building's security.
This is a unique, free service provided by Armstrong to help recover lost keys.
We provide a special key tag that can be attached to your business keys. If someone finds them, they can drop them in any mailbox. The keys are sent to us, and we return them to you anonymously, meaning the finder never sees your business address or security details.
